In today’s corporate world, the concept of team building has taken center stage, especially after the recent economic crisis which caused majority of the companies to downsize and focus on improving the productivity. In fact, the few good companies that had previously emphasized on corporate team building didn’t feel the wrath of the economic slowdown as much as the remaining companies did. This by itself should explain to you the significance of having good and productive teams formed between your employees. After all, you wouldn’t want to repeatedly fire employees and hire new ones because the cost of training a new employee is prohibitive and something that is best left as the last option. Instead, you should try and cultivate positive team building within the current employees.

The reason why many industries are clamoring to hire facilitators to guide them with positive corporate team building is because research has shown that companies with the most successful teams will ultimately have the most success on the whole. It is not anymore about hiring the brightest or the smartest, it is about finding the people who are most flexible and are capable of working in a team environment without resorting selfish or individualistic goals. In fact, many people are actually developing their communication and verbal abilities in order to add value to their educational degrees. After all, no person will like to be left out because of their lack of team building ability despite being one of the brightest candidates. In our ever-increasing global marketplace, it is more and more likely that you will encounter non-native speakers of English in your workplace. This can be a wonderful opportunity to get familiar with another culture, but it can be frustrating when the other person’s limited English or accent interferes with communication. You may not think that you can do anything about it, but actually there are several steps you can take. If the person has very limited English, you could offer to help him or her find ESL classes. If their knowledge of English is good, but their accent makes them hard to understand, suggest to management that they offer accent reduction training for those who need it. In the meantime, though, what do you do if you are working with this person and you just can’t understand each other?

Try these five tips to improve your ability to communicate:

1. DO NOT Speak More Loudly

Unless the person is wearing hearing aids or has a known hearing loss, please do not speak more loudly to him or her. He or she is not deaf, and shouting does not improve communication. It is a natural reaction for many people who are misunderstood to repeat their statement a little louder each time, as if the listener were a stubborn two year old willfully ignoring the request. Use a normal tone of voice. Your listener will thank you. Continue reading ‘Communication Breakdown with Non-Native Speakers: Do’s and Don’ts for Co-Workers’ »

In a corporate environment, it has been observed that to achieve success, you need to have people working in unison in the form of teams to work towards a common goal. The age of working alone is long gone and today, if you can’t work in a team, you will find it tough to get employed. Hence, companies too have realized this and are trying to find solutions that can be used to inculcate a team building culture within the organization. There are many team building activities that have been adopted in a number of organizations. If you too have a sizeable organization, you ought to pick one that will work for your company.

Team building activities are designed such that people who are in an ineffective team are given higher preference than those who have been effective team players. It is made to encourage people to trust in their teammates and learn to make decisions with them, and not behind them. After all, even if a single person in a team is not doing her/his job like they are supposed, it damages the integrity of them team which will then affect all the members of the team alike. This will ultimate affect the overall productivity of the team and might make the team members skeptical about being in a team henceforth. Thus, before it reaches to that extreme stage, a couple of well devised activities to improve teams should be incorporated into the work routine at regular intervals. What Susan Boyle can teach us all.

Susn Boyle

I am sure most of you have heard about Susan Boyle, the 47-year-old Scottish singer who wowed Simon Cowell and the other judges on Britain’s Got Talent ( if not check her out on YouTube before you read the rest of this). But get out the tissues.

She single handily put the world in their place. She showed us how judgmental we are and in many cases just downright mean. Most expected her to fail. But she showed us greatness can come from the most unsuspected places. Continue reading ‘What Susan Boyle can teach us all’ »

One of the “perks” of my business, is that I get to be a fly on the wall for a brief time in a large number of differing organizations.

During one three week period, I did several presentations both in Bulgaria and Romania to a wide variety of companies, from large multi-nationals to small local businesses. Not unlike North America, I saw companies with these attributes: 1) Companies with people who are truly engaged in whatever activity is going on, 2) companies whose people do what they are told really well but are not truly engaged and lastly, and sadly 3) companies who say they want employee engagement but don’t really want input from their employees. (Where does your company fit in?)

It almost goes without saying which group accomplished the most in my sessions – of course it was the ones who were truly engaged! And as you probably know, when you work with engaged people you have as much fun as they do, which I certainly did. Continue reading ‘Let everyone get involved!’ »

Here’s one way to give your business proposal more impact: Use a spreadsheet to present a summary. I’ve done it a few times and found it effective. And, not just for the numbers — you can also present worded arguments in a spreadsheet.

A spreadsheet has several benefits: First, it’s an interesting way to organize your case. It allows you to put the salient facts and issues into columns and rows, which makes it easier for others to grasp what you’re saying.

Let’s say you’re part of a team and each team member has taken on some specific tasks, and together these individual tasks add up to a complete project. So why not create a spreadsheet that lists “Who”, “What”, “Where”, “When”, and “Why” as column headers. Each member of the team then would be listed in the “Who” column on the left side of the page, with the detailed information following along on the same row. If as a Team or HRD Manager, you find yourself shaking your head and saying “Why can’t they all just get along?” Your Team might just need to take the PEP Pill! No fear—we’re not talking about a “Red Bull Power Drink” for teams, rather a simple but effective employee education program developed by the Now to WOW!â„¢ Faculty which fosters inter-department understanding, communications and improved customer service performance.

According to Faculty Director, and Senior Team Facilitator, Rosemary Rein, PhD “PEP” stands for Personnel Exchange Program and is particularly suited for organizations that have multiple touch points with the customers and or the need for smooth transitions between sales and service operations. If you continually find yourself, as a CEO or HRD manager, brought into find common ground and solutions between departments and/or have a need for your team to work together on core initiatives and projects, PEP may very well be your prescription and the pivot point for developing individual performers into a highly successful and synergistic team. A lot of MLM “gurus’ will tell you that, “It’s not about selling, it’s about sharing.” I think they’re missing the point. They’re trying to say that sharing your knowledge will benefit you in the long run by attracting the kind of trust and loyalty that a successful network needs. I get that. I’ve even been known to say that myself. But to say that “it’s not about selling” is stretching that point way too far. You’re in a business and at the end of the day, sales DO matter. Let’s get this point clear – It’s about both.

You are sharing your business opportunity, but you are also selling the idea of yourself as a leader. If you fail to make that rather fine distinction, you’re setting yourself up for a situation where you have a network of eager marketers with no actual income coming in to keep everybody happy. What are the chances you’re going to be able to keep that network together for long?

To have a successful business in MLM, you need to share your hard earned marketing skills down the line so your network can replicate your success. Do that and you’re creating teams of highly effective marketers who can drive your residual income streams to amazing heights. You need to share what you know about MLM to fine tune a well oiled machine that produces consistently spectacular results.

That’s the easy part. Call it sharing, training, mentoring or educating. It all boils down to showing people what you’ve got and laying your cards on the table. But the tricky part, where a lot of people don’t follow through on is selling. Continue reading ‘MLM – Sharing Vs Selling’ »

“Change is not made without inconvenience, even from worse to better.” – Richard Hooker

I couldn’t have said it better myself! As you know, I’m all for making changes to better our lives and businesses, but I have to admit that in the past 2 weeks my tolerance levels have been sorely tested. I’ve had to relearn patience skills and there were times that I’m sure my perseverance quotient on a scale of 1 to 10 was at -20.

I’ve been restructuring my business to better reflect the needs and desires of my valued clients. Consequently I’ve spent the last few weeks going over new designs, changing my website content, and doing a complete overhaul of my collateral. After jumping more hurdles than a sprinter at the Olympic Games, last week I finally hit the ‘wall.’ Nothing seemed to be working properly on my site and I found myself getting totally frustrated from juggling too many balls and putting out fires. At one point I even wondered why I was going through all this agony. I was not so lovingly reminded that change is great, but it definitely takes perseverance and patience to implement something new into your life. Continue reading ‘Want Change? Start With Patience!’ »
