Shared interests bind people together to form a community. If we consider an organization as a community of interest we can transform our approach to management and governance of any organization. When we are considering any action we simply ask “How does this serve our community interest?”

An example from my apprenticeship years may help to illustrate the power of this approach. As a young man I was appointed to a directorship of a manufacturing company in Australia. The company employed 250 people mainly from diverse migrant backgrounds. We had people from Italy, Malta, Greece, Lebanon, Turkey, Cyprus and England with a sprinkling of others, even a few Australians. Most members of our workforce spoke limited English, but adopted English as our only shared means of communication. I have never worked in a more culturally diverse organization. Life has a lot of things going for it. You would think that the 5 F’s of life would not be any of them. But they are. If any of you have your mind in the gutter on what the 5 F’s are, now is the time to clean that out. (hehehe)

The 5 F’s, once understood and worked on, can lead to success in your life in so many ways. The 5 F’s simply are Faith, Fitness, Family, Friends and Finance. Faith is one of those topics that people have thoughts and ideas on, but is kind of ignored in general conversation. Most of this fear of talking about this is that they want to not offend others. Also, the thought is that things have to be kept separate. We can’t talk about our faith at work too much, in schools, with others. There is a distinct reason that it’s listed first. It really is the most important. If you take a look behind the scenes of just about all successful people, you will find the importance that faith played in that success. There are countless articles and experiments out there that have connected faith to being a healthier, happy, and satisfying life. Continue reading ‘Life’s 5 F’s – Great Guidelines’ »

So many times in life it’s a good idea to pay attention. In Leadership that is one of the basic traits that leaders have. They are focused on paying attention a little more, they expect it, and they realize they have to do it more often than non-leaders. There are times where all of us have to pay attention, leaders or not.

The other day I was going to the store when at a major intersection I noticed an ambulance coming towards me. I was stopped at the light and I had the summer tunes going with the sun roof open in the car, enjoying a great Michigan summer day. I right away turned down my radio and proceeded to watch at least a half dozen cars go right through the intersection with the ambulance sitting there waiting to go through. The lights were flashing, sirens going, he was blowing his loud sounding horn and the people that went through the intersection didn’t even flinch. They didn’t even try to slow down. I think most of them didn’t even notice the ambulance sitting there. I just held my hands up in the air, yelling “Come on people!!?” (like that did any good for the situation). Everyday we as leaders are faced with problems and are expected to handle them quickly and efficiently. There are some that think problems will go away with time but that is rarely the case. There is an old saying,” Problems only get worse with time.” My experiences agree with this saying, time only allows problems to get larger.

We have minor problems that we can resolve immediately as they are very simple and we have resolved similar ones in the past. Experience is a great tool, but we also face problems we have never encountered before.

In our lives we are daily challenged to make important decisions. The people we are leading depend on us as leaders to make proper decisions allowing them to do their job.

It is amazing how long we remember leaders that have made a poor or wrong decision. I can remember in 1968 in the State Baseball Playoffs I was on third base with one out. A teammate hit a ball to right field; my coach told me to tag and run no stop, no go no stop. I had run 60 feet back and forth listening to him and finally ran and was out at the plate. We fortunately won that game but to this day I remember it like it happened today. That was a harmless situation where a leader couldn’t make a decision and stand by it. Where does every great idea that has ever been created come from?
The mind.
Every great idea has started from the mind. Created by desire and the passion to make it happen.
If you can control your mindset and focus on your goal with all of your desire and passion then you send a message to your subconscious automatically to setting your mindset to success.

There is no reason not to believe in yourself anyone can achieve greatness in there lives they just need to take action and not let life dictate where they go and who they meet.

Most people wish for and work towards greater success–in their careers, in relationships, and their activities. Yet many people are unprepared when that success comes along, and the success becomes a trigger for stress and unhappiness.

Why?

Dr. Jason Plaks, a social psychologist at the University of Toronto and Kristin Stecher a research scientist at the University of Washington, reported in their study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, that how people view their abilities in the workpalce impacts how they respond to success. They found that those people who thought of their capabities as fixed were more likely to become anxious and disoriented when faced with dramatic or sudden success, causing their subsequent peformance to plumment, compared to those people who thought of their abilties as changeable.
